The Timeless Appeal of Lanzarote

The holiday island of Lanzarote has a timeless appeal that is a reflection of its unspoiled landscapes as well as its amazing climate. Along with the other Canary Islands it is the only genuine winter sun destination within Europe where temperatures can be a comfortable 20º Celsius in the middle of December.

The island’s volcanic history has created whole areas of countryside that look untouched by human hand. In the Timanfaya National Park, this is actually the case, as visitors are not allowed to walk on the lava fields and flows and can only view them from the tour bus.

The jagged rocks and startling colours of the volcanoes do give the island a prehistoric look, something which has inspired numerous filmmakers to shoot pictures here. But the main resorts of the island, in contrast, are well developed and harmoniously designed, with plenty of tropical planting forming a verdant backdrop.

Puerto del Carmen, as the oldest of the resorts, has numerous palm lined streets and spaces. The enclave where most of the best villas in Puerto del Carmen can be found also boasts many beautiful gardens.

But Lanzarote is not merely defined by its volcanoes, as the rugged vistas of the north of the island offer a distinctly different feel, which is far more similar to the topography of the other islands, such as Gran Canaria. The drive from the former capital of Teguise takes visitors to the highest point of the island and has spectacular views.

Thanks to the small size of Lanzarote and the fact that its roads are very quiet, driving is a pleasure. And this is enhanced by the fact that car hire in Lanzarote is considerably cheaper than in mainland Europe, as is petrol. As a result many holidaymakers find it is the best way of getting the most out of their holiday on the island.

Apart from the natural beauty, Lanzarote also has numerous man made attractions that are pleasing to the eye. Most of these were created by local artist Cesar Manrique, but even those that came later tend to follow his design ideals of working in harmony with nature.

These factors, combined with wonderful weather, account for the high number of visitors the island receives each year. And as flights to Lanzarote are only four hours from the UK, it is easy to see why people choose to come for winter sun.

The Grand Canyon Blends Nature And Technology

For anyone who’s never been to the Grand Canyon, I’m sure that the first image that comes to mind is lots of rocks, barren landscape and bit of river flowing through the bottom.   Everyone imagines the Grand Canyon as being a marvel of nature, with stunning vistas, and a deserved spot amongst the official wonders of the world.  But if your into technology and engineering at all, then there is even more to marvel at when visiting the Grand Canyon.  The Hoover Dam has been an integral part of the Canyon since 1945, but even more recently built is the Grand Canyon sky walk.

A great resource for checkout out different things to do at the Grand Canyon, are Grand Canyon Tours.  While the Hoover Dam may be my far the more technological marvel of the two, I think the Sky Walk with it’s glass floors perched some 800 feet above the canyon floor would be pretty breath taking as well.  I’ve been to the glass floored observation deck on the CN tower in Toronto, and that made me pretty nervous.  While nature purists may balk at intrusion of man made technology into such a beautiful natural environment, I find it a little more interesting.  It’s inevitable that we leave our mark on this planet, and I think the sky walk for one allows for a greater appreciation of the nature around it.  It’s more important to find ways to blend technology and nature in a beneficial partnership, then to exclude one entirely for the preservation of the other.

Russian Travel Tips And Suggestions

I’m getting to the age, where I’m easily bored on vacation. I’ve been to so many different places and on so many different excursions that I really need something special to make it worthwhile for me to leave home. Surfing around the other day I think I found it, and in one of the least likely places . . . Russia. They’re are all kinds of cool stuff you can do in Russia, that wasn’t available just a few years ago. You could for example, take some time learning to fly, and actually fly with some help real Russian jet fighters. Now that’s not something you can do in many countries. Just one of the other nice perks to the cold war ending. Personally, I’d love to fly mig jets around, even if it was just for a half hour or so. I realize, that I’d probably just be sitting in the back while the real pilot did all the flying, but that’s OK with me. Just hope I don’t lose my lunch in the process.

Of course for those of you with more tame aspirations for your adventure travel, there is always red square tours Russia to try out. The architecture there is truly fascinating, and your feet never leave the ground. I can think of a few people in my family that would probably enjoy that kind of tourist time a little more.

The Town of Agde in the South of France

The town of Agde is justly proud of its 2600 years of ancient history. This ancient city has Greek origins and has always been associated with its maritime trade due to its positioning. Due to its location both on the banks of the Herault River and, more recently, at the end of the Canal du Midi it has always been strategically well-placed for water trade.

Today Agde is no longer a large trading post but rather the gateway to the most popular beach resort in France, Cap d’Agde. The main industry here is tourism and the resort can hold up to 175,000 holiday makers at any one time. Agde itself is seeing an increase in property development as more and more investors look to move into the Languedoc Roussillon. Second home owners in particular are drawn here due to the very convenient travel links. The airports of Beziers and Montpellier are both close and the AP motorway serves Toulouse, Avignon and over the border to Spain. [...]
